This is the Persian translation of Richard Foster's classic book. The author explores the central spiritual practices of the Christian faith and provides a path to spiritual growth. The book celebrates twelve “classical disciplines,” which are divided into three categories, or movements of the Spirit: inward, outward, and corporate. Foster offers insights and examples of how these disciplines can become a part of our daily lives and bring us closer to God.
Richard Foster approaches spiritual disciplines with a clear, life-giving perspective rather than a dry or rigid religiosity, exploring practices within the Christian tradition that have often been forgotten or misunderstood—such as prayer, fasting, silence, simplicity, study, service, and confession. He presents these disciplines not as actions meant to earn moral merit, but as tools for inner transformation: pathways that gently rescue the mind and heart from fragmentation and superficial living.
The central insight of the book is that spiritual discipline, contrary to common assumptions, is not the enemy of freedom but its very condition. With simple language and concrete examples, Foster shows that just as practicing music or sports leads to greater freedom, spiritual practices also free a person from the bondage of habits, fears, and self-centeredness. The book speaks both to seekers of faith and to anyone longing for depth, meaning, and order in their inner life—a quiet yet stirring work that invites the reader into a more intentional way of living.
