What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the aristocrat? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by drawing on the Sermon on the Mount. In this, his most famous book, Bonhoeffer contrasts cheap grace that leads to self indulgence, and true grace that leads to discipleship.
In The Cost of Discipleship, Bonhoeffer, drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, presents a clear picture of the true meaning of following Christ. He warns that faith without action and obedience turns into “cheap grace”—a grace accepted without transformation or cost, leading a person toward self-deception and complacency. In contrast, “costly grace” is an invitation to take responsibility, to undergo real inner change, and to follow faithfully—even when such discipleship demands a personal, social, or existential price.
Bonhoeffer, who himself paid the cost of moral and spiritual loyalty during the Nazi era, challenges the reader to face a fundamental question: If Jesus were to call us to follow Him today, what would our response be? This book is not only a theological work but also a moral and existential manifesto that urges the reader to reflect deeply on their choices, freedom, and responsibilities.
